Thai Thanee

Thai food is internationally famous. Whether chili-hot or mild, harmony is the driving force behind each dish. This weeks restaurant, “Thai Thanee” doesn't depart a great deal from the other Thai restaurants Chicagoans are used to visiting. What does set them apart is that owners Ruangurai Chanruang and John Blaine are serving their exotic and spicy fare in northwest suburban Streamwood.

Pulling into the strip mall it’s located in might give you a false impression that this is just a carry out restaurant. Not true, Thai Thanee ("Thai City") actually has a simple and fairly spacious dining room that seats 60. It's simple yet elegant, with a color scheme of green, yellow, and beige.

The menu here is fairly large and covers items such as satay’s, won tons, curries, and pretty much anything you can add a peanut sauce to. For appetizers we decide on the chicken won tons and the chicken satay. For our entrées my wife chooses the chicken pad Thai and I decide on the pad prik with beef.

The appetizers come out very quickly; the won tons are filled with chicken and have a great crisp exterior to go with a nice and chewy center. The chicken satay has hints of garlic and lemon grass and is accompanied with a side of peanut sauce. The chicken is skewered for easy dipping and for the sheer fact that eating with you fingers is just plain fun.

Dinner arrives and my wife’s pad Thai is a mound of chewy rice noodles and strips of tender chicken that is cooked with a peanut sauce and then topped with cilantro and chopped peanuts. My pad prik is loaded with thin slices of beef, slices of onion, green pepper, jalapeño, and mushrooms. The sauce has a similar taste to Mongolian beef, while the beef was slightly firm but not so tough that it ruined the dish.

Thai-restaurant aficionados know that dessert is rarely much of an option. Thai Thanee is true to the genre and offers only mango, coconut and green tea ice cream. We skip the dessert and try a Thai iced coffee instead. A tall glass is filled with coffee, sweetened condensed milk, and mixed with crushed ice. Together it created a chilled treat that satisfied the sweet tooth in both of us.

Final bill with tip was about $30, which is a great price compared to most sit down restaurants. Overall “Thai Thanee” offers fast service, comfortable atmosphere, and good food for a good price. Rating ** and ½ out of ****.
