| One of the most common things friends ask me is, “Why haven’t you reviewed all the places you’ve ever eaten at?” The answer is that I write each review as an experience, so a place that I ate at years ago might be a little fuzzy in the memory banks. To remedy that, I am revisiting some places to get a fresh experience. One such place is Chevys, located at 1180 Plaza Drive in Schaumburg (off of Golf Rd.). Once inside of Chevys, you are surrounded by a busy and bustling restaurant. Walls are painted in earth tones, and tables are covered in red vinyl table cloths. The menu is pretty large, covering all the basics from tacos, fajitas, fresh guacamole, and Mexican flan. First thing on the table are the chips and salsa. Chips are made fresh and served warm, while the salsa has a chunky consistency with a smoky flavor. The salsa has a darker tint to it due to the fact that they roast the tomatoes and peppers in order to give it that smoky flavor. Service here in the past has been extremely fast and efficient. Tonight though, that did not hold true. It took almost 10 minutes for our waitress to arrive at our table! By the time she did we already knew exactly what we were going to order. We start off with the chicken flautas as our appetizer and I also add a house salad. For dinner my wife orders the steak tacos and I choose the steak fajitas. There is an option of adding “El Diablo” sauce to my order for extra kick, so I did. My wife also gets a peach margarita, which she enjoyed but I found odd. I enjoy my margaritas in original form. The flautas come and they consist of shredded chicken rolled in tortillas and then deep fried. The flautas are crisp and flavorful on their own, but are served with a sweet dipping sauce. While my wife really enjoyed the sauce, I found it to be too sweet and made me feel like I was eating an egg roll and not a flauta. Ten minutes after we finish the flautas our dinner arrives. Problem is that I never received my salad! I informed our waitress of this and she apologized and offered to still bring it out free of charge. But when I already have fajitas in front of me, I no longer want to bother with a salad. Each dinner is served with Mexican rice and refried beans, which are both good but the beans are a little to chunky. My wife’s tacos are served and the steak inside is both tender and flavorful, with the right amount of char on them. My fajitas arrive and my steak is extremely tender but is missing the char that adds texture and flavor. The tortillas here are very fresh since they make them all day long. It’s actually a lot of fun to watch them do it. But their tortillas are different. They’re actually a little puffy. Think of a cross between a tortilla and pita. Very good, but different. Last off is dessert. We decide to share the coconut cajeta. Vanilla ice cream is served on top of cajeta (Mexican caramel) and topped with toasted coconut and whipped cream. Cajeta is very sweet so the vanilla ice cream is a nice neutralizer. Toasted coconut adds nice crunch to a very satisfying dessert. The final bill with tip came to about $55 for the two of us. The food is good but the normally very good service was very below average tonight. Still worth a visit if you’re shopping at the Woodfield Mall, but not worth a special trip. Rating ** out of ****.
