| Quick history lesson, D.O.C. stands for Denominazione di Origine Controllata ("Controlled Denomination of Origin"). It is Italy's equivalent to France's APPELLATION D'ORIGINE CONTRÔLÉE. D.O.C.'s are defined by the geographic area of production for each wine, the varieties that can be used, the minimum alcohol content, the maximum yield, and the specifications for aging. That aside, it means these guys know their wine but are thankfully not pretentious about it.
To start off, the vibe at D.O.C. is cool and works well for dates as well as meeting up with friends. Choose your wine first and then look over the menu. A glass of the Foxen Pinot Noir is my choice and this well balanced wine paired wonderfully with my meal and ended with a clean fruity finish. Wine alone is fun but pair it with the right meal and it’s pure bliss. I highly recommend starting with their butcher block where you choose from a vast array of cheeses, bruschettas, and sliced meats. I love variety so I order creamy Manchego, spicy sopresatta, and some tangy green apple and brie cheese bruschetta and I’m on cloud 9! I’m sure the other starters are worth trying but with a glass of wine this butcher’s block is a must! Our server tonight is super knowledgeable and is very happy when the entrée order is placed. Crab cakes are often appetizers but I say go ahead and order the entrée! These fork tender cakes are loaded with lump crab meat and are crisp 360 degrees around. If you like texture as much as I do then these are for you. The cabernet braised short ribs were so tender that my poor knife must have felt like the third wheel between my fork and my mouth! That decadent cab sauce, tender meat, and mashed potatoes kept me smiling bite after wonderful bite. Dessert choices are pretty limited but deliver fairly well. The lemon cheesecake is opposite of what I love about cheesecake. I like cheesecake dense and rich but this was light, airy, and refreshing. I liked it though! After the richness of the meal it actually worked nicely. The other option was the warm skillet chocolate chip cookie. Served warm and topped with vanilla ice cream I enjoyed it but actually felt it was a bit too rich. Entrees top out at $28 but many items can be had for under $20. Overall D.O.C. Wine Bar offers knowledgeable staff, cool atmosphere, and darn good food for a price that I would call fair for what you get. Rating **** out of *****.
