| Visit a town once and you probably see a few sites. Visit a town frequently and you might grab a bite to eat every once in a while. Grow up in a town and you sample many places to eat and eventually find your favorite neighborhood eateries. Growing up in Skokie means one of those places is “Hub’s”. A Skokie institution for over thirty years, “Hub’s” still keeps a loyal following. Located at 3727 W. Dempster Ave in Skokie, “Hub’s” also has another location at 5540 N. Lincoln in Chicago. Parking at the Skokie location is somewhat limited but street parking is available along the side streets. Walk into the somewhat small dining room and you are greeted by a very large menu board that can sometimes present a daunting task of deciding what to order. The menu ranges from burgers, dogs, gyros, steak, chicken, ribs, dessert, and more. You really need to be a picky eater if you can’t find something to order. Once you finally decide, you step up to the counter to order, and then take a seat until your number is called. Since I’ve eaten at “Hub’s” for over twenty years, there probably isn’t much on the menu I haven’t tried. While I have never tried anything that I didn’t like there, I do have some favorites. First thing is their gyro sandwich. Now you would think that gyro’s are the same everywhere, but their not! Many places either slice their meat too thin or don’t have it rotating on a spit, meaning they fry it up to a crisp. “Hub’s” on the other hand slices up a mound of thick cut lamb that’s rotating on a spit, places it on a warm fluffy pita, and then tops it with plenty of onion, tomato, and their great sauce. Their gyro sauce is so good in fact that “Saturday Night Live” actually did a skit on “Hub’s” and their gyro sauce (juice)! The goods don’t stop there. Large salads are full of fresh veggies and high quality toppings, chicken salad and the Greek salad are great choices. Burgers here are top notch and big. In fact the smallest burger is ¼ ponder, while the rest are all ½ pounds, the American burger and mushroom burger are two of my favorites. Another winning sandwich is the sirloin steak. Tender steak is served on warm garlic bread and topped with onion. One thing to note is that they really love onions here. Almost everything comes onions and my friends you get plenty! Not in the mood for a sandwich? Barbecue chicken and ribs are proven winners. What makes them good? Good meat and their signature barbecue sauce that’s nice and peppery. If you just walk by the restaurant, the scent of ribs always seems to draw you inside. Almost all dinners come with fries and coleslaw, and that’s not a bad thing. Fries are medium thickness with a nice fluffy center while the coleslaw is creamy and flavorful. Other notable sides are the fried mushrooms, zucchini, chili, baked potato, and corn on the cob. Unlike most small restaurants of this nature, “Hub’s” has a fairly large dessert menu. Choices range from tiramisu, cheesecake, carrot cake, and baklava. The cheesecake is simple and very much like Sara Lee, but my favorite is the baklava. Baklava is a Greek dessert that is chopped walnuts and honey wrapped up in filo dough, simple and delicious. How many places even serve baklava? Not enough. Prices are reasonable considering the quality of food and the amount. Choose a sandwich, fries, and a pop and you’ll pay around $8. Considering a “value” menu meal at most places is about $6 nowadays this place is a bargain. Full size dinners range from $12-18 and are better quality than many more expensive competitors. They’re even open late, 11pm M-T and until midnight on Friday’s and Saturday’s. Overall “Hub’s” offers very good food and a large menu at reasonable prices. Definitely worth a try next time you’re in or near Skokie. Rating *** out of ****. Home |
