You know you’ve been with someone for a long time when they suggest you go eat at a barn. No, I’m not kidding, and apparently neither was my wife. This week’s restaurant is “Rooster’s” and it is actually a barn. Located in historic old town Bloomingdale, “Rooster’s” definitely stands out from the crowd. While this isn’t my first time in a barn, it’s definitely the first time I ever ate at one.

When you pull into the large parking lot you’ll be glad to find out that you don’t need to drive a pick up truck or even a tractor to eat here! Nope, regular folks are welcome. Step inside the “barn” and you’ll be greeted by two floors of casual family friendly dining. Tables are covered with multiple sheets of paper and crayons are provided for your, I mean your child’s drawing pleasure. For all you hot sauce fanatics, “Rooster’s” boast five hundred different hot sauces (pictured). Ask your server for a sample and/or buy a bottle to take home for yourself.

The large menu covers wide range of foods including fried fish, chicken, burgers, ribs, and even a few Mexican dishes. Tonight we decide to start with the buffalo wings and a cup of clam chowder for myself. For our dinners my wife chooses the Cajun chicken sandwich and I decide on the ribs and chicken combo. A nice option is the availability to customize your entrée. For my ribs I kept them barbeque, but the chicken I was able to choose a jerk version, hence giving me more variety.

My chowder is out first and it’s no winner. The broth was very salty and the clams must have been hiding, because I struggled to find more than a few. Their “famous” wings were next, and they were ten large chicken wings tossed in a slightly spicy wing sauce. The sauce had good flavor but a very odd thing happened. The wings were dry once we bit into them! How does a deep fried wing that’s tossed in sauce end up dry? Are they famous for being dry?

Dinners are next, and let’s hope that they’re an improvement over the starters. The Cajun sandwich is a large and juicy blackened chicken breast served on a multi grain bun and served with a side of honey mustard. This sandwich was actually very good and not dry at all. How does a grilled chicken breast end up moist and deep fried buffalo wings dry? Quality fries are accompany the sandwich and have a nice crisp outside and fluffy inside. My ribs are also “famous” but are in fact pretty good. Fall off the bone ribs are topped with their peppery barbeque sauce and are definitely worth a try. The jerk chicken was extremely moist and juicy and had a surprisingly authentic jerk flavor to them. My dinner came with a baked potato and sautéed zucchini in an effort to make the meal a little healthier.

Time to finish off with something sweet. For dessert my wife decides on the apple pie and I go for their signature “Rooskie”. The apple pie has tender slices of apple with hints of cinnamon and a tasty crumbly topping. What’s a “Rooskie” you ask? A jumbo chocolate chip cookie served in the pan it was baked in and the topped with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce. Sounds like a winning combination.  Almost but no cigar, the cookie was slightly over cooked and they really could have given larger scoops of ice cream. Still a good dessert but not the home run I was hoping for.

Final bill with tip was about $55, decent value for the amount of food we received. Overall “Rooster’s” has lackluster starters, good main courses, and a love it or leave it décor. Rating ** out of ****.
