Having a baby changes you. When you’re young and free, you go out and party to ring in the New Year. When you have a baby, you go and have a nice dinner with your wife/husband/partner and then go home and ring the New Year in quietly. While not exciting, it can be quite nice if you pick the right place. This year’s choice was “Rosebud” Old World Italian. There are actually eleven different “Rosebud” restaurants throughout Chicagoland, each with a different cuisine. This version is in Schaumburg and actually took over the old “Chicago Prime” spot after it closed due to scandal.

Visually this is a beautiful restaurant. Dim lights, leather clad booths, and dark deep red curtains give a very warm feel to the dining room. The large menu covers all the traditional Italian fare along with a few items you rarely see. To start our night off right we order the jumbo shrimp cocktail and a couple of house salads. The shrimp consists of four very large shrimp nestled on top of a bed of ice and accompanied by lemons and cocktail sauce with a dash or horseradish. The shrimp are very meaty and the horseradish gives the perfect kick to the sauce. The salads were crisp lettuce mixed with tomato, onion and pepperoncini and served with house vinaigrette. Simple but good.

For our entrées, my wife chooses the rigatoni with vodka sauce and I take the suggestion of our waitress and order the steak pizziaola. The rigatoni is lightly covered in a creamy vodka sauce that does not over power. Many places have your pasta swimming in sauce and occasionally making your pasta mushy, this had enough for flavor but not too much to take away from the perfectly al dente pasta. As good as it was it was still too boring for my tastes. I need some type of meat product in my entrées. My Steak arrives and it is three large medallions of steak, topped with buffalo mozzarella, and then swimming in a pool of white wine, cherry tomatoes, and gnocchi. The dish was fantastic! The steak was tender and the wine and tomato sauce complimented the meat perfectly. You see, sometimes it’s good to listen to your servers suggestions.

Whenever you’re enjoying a relaxed pace meal you tend to look around at the dishes the servers are walking by with. The show stoppers always seem to be the desserts! So many wonderful choices make it hard to decide at times. My wife chooses the spumoni gelato, while I am torn between crème Brule or the cheesecake. I ask my waitress for help and she said the cheesecake is best of both worlds. Ok, she was right about the steak. The spumoni was an incredibly creamy combination of chocolate, pistachio, and cherry gelato. I like ice cream but I love gelato! My cheesecake arrives and it’s dense cheesecake topped with a caramelized sugar crust. The best part of crème Brule is the sugar crust on top and this cheesecake had it. I tell you this waitress knew her stuff. Wonderful dessert.

Final bill with tip was about $110 for the two of us. Sure a bit pricey, but for the atmosphere and the food it was worth it. Overall this “Rosebud” delivered very good food with a warm inviting atmosphere. Rating *** out of ****.
